What we collect, what we don't, and how to contact us.

Effective date: 22 April 2026

Summary

This Privacy Policy explains how Learn Cornish (“we”, “us”, “our”) collects, uses, and protects information when you use the Learn Cornish website (learncornish.org) and the Learn Cornish mobile and web apps (the “Service”). The mobile app is available on Android via Google Play and is planned for iOS; this policy applies to both.

1. Information we collect

a) Account information (Firebase Authentication)

If you create an account, we use Firebase Authentication to sign you in. Depending on the sign-in method, we may process your email address, provider identifiers (for example, if you sign in with Google or Apple), and account identifiers provided by Firebase (such as a Firebase UID). We do not store plain-text passwords.

b) App data you create

We store app data associated with your account, such as learning progress (completed items, scores, streaks), preferences, and settings, so that your progress persists and can sync across devices.

c) Microphone access (audio)

The mobile app requests microphone permission to enable pronunciation practice and other voice features.

  • What we collect: audio captured from your microphone only while you are actively using a voice feature.
  • How it is used: audio is processed on-device to detect speech and give feedback.
  • What we do not do: we do not store microphone audio and we do not transmit it off your device.
  • Background access: we do not access the microphone when the app is not in active use.
  • Optional: microphone access is optional; you can use the app without enabling voice features.
  • Your control: you can disable microphone access at any time in your device settings. Voice features will stop working if you do.

d) Diagnostics (Firebase Crashlytics)

We use Firebase Crashlytics to collect crash reports and diagnostic information to improve stability. This may include device information (model, OS version), app version and build, crash traces, and performance or diagnostic data, and identifiers associated with crash reporting.

e) Analytics (Firebase Analytics / Google Analytics 4)

On the website, Firebase Analytics is loaded only if you accept analytics on the cookie banner. It records aggregated usage — pages visited, links clicked, approximate location derived from your IP, and a Google Analytics client ID stored in the _ga / _ga_<id> cookies. We do not enable advertising features, Google Signals, or remarketing audiences. In the mobile app, Firebase Analytics is on by default and can be disabled at any time in Settings → Privacy → “Help us improve Learn Cornish”.

f) Cookies (website only)

learncornish.org uses two strictly necessary cookies — one to remember your language preference, and one to allow access to preview links during maintenance windows. We do not set analytics, advertising, or third-party tracking cookies. See the cookies page for the full list.

2. How we use information

  • Provide and maintain the Service.
  • Create and manage accounts and sign-in.
  • Sync your progress and preferences across devices.
  • Improve reliability and troubleshoot issues.
  • Respond to support requests and communicate service notices.
  • Protect the Service against abuse and security threats.
  • Comply with legal obligations.

3. Sharing of information

We do not sell your personal information and we do not share your personal information for third-party advertising.

We may share information:

  • With service providers: we use Google Firebase (Authentication, Analytics, and Crashlytics) to operate the Service. These providers process data under their own terms and privacy policies.
  • For legal and safety reasons: if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, and security of users, the Service, or the public.
  • With your consent: when you enable a feature that requires it.

4. Third-party services

The Service uses the following third-party services, each governed by its own privacy policy:

  • Firebase Authentication
  • Firebase Analytics
  • Firebase Crashlytics

learncornish.org also links to third-party Cornish-language resources (dictionaries, shops, organisations, classes). Those sites have their own privacy policies. When you click through, you leave Learn Cornish.

5. Data retention

  • Account and app data: retained while your account is active or as needed to provide the Service.
  • Crash and diagnostics data: retained as needed for debugging, reliability, and trend analysis.
  • Microphone audio: not retained (processed on-device only).

6. Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational safeguards designed to protect information during transmission and storage. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Your choices and rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your personal information.

  • Disable microphone permission in your device settings at any time.
  • Request access or deletion of your account data by emailing support@learncornish.org. Include the email address associated with your account.

8. Children's privacy

The Service is intended for a general audience and is not specifically directed to children. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact us at support@learncornish.org and we will work to delete it.

9. International data transfers

Your information may be processed in countries where we or our service providers operate. We take steps designed to protect information when transferred.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated version will be posted at learncornish.org/en/privacy-policy with a new effective date.
